Tara Gupta

Tara E. Gupta, a New York based graphic designer and critic, aims to inspire design discourse and is partial to puns and good typography. Shes channeled her bookish tendencies and inquisitive nature to become a thoughtful and motivated designer & writer.

Originally hailing from southern Virginia she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design at Virginia Commonwealth University. With BFA in hand she began work as a graphic designer for an architectural and exhibition design firm. She was privileged to work on museum exhibits related to the Civil Rights movement, as well as other community design projects.

While in the SVA Design Criticism program, Tara interned with Susan Grant Lewin Associates, learning the ropes of public relations in Art and Architecture. She gained editorial experience at Print Magazine and is currently finishing a research project with Steven Heller on his newest book.

Tara’s thesis “Honed/Toned: A Critique of Fitness Culture” explores the intersection of design in fitness culture. She did a bit of heavy lifting in conjunction with extensive reading, posing as a potential gym member to nine different health clubs in New York City. Through her research she hopes to begin a new conversation about our bodies and the spaces we design for them.
