Jane Nisselson is the founder of Virtual Beauty, a film production studio whose Webby-nominated short films focus on the intersection of design, science, and engineering. Through her films, Nisselson tells stories of systems—of scientific models, innovation, diagrams, molecules, and fragrances. In this lecture Nisselson invites us to look at making films as a modular building process that can draw from a mix of data, images, text, audio, and live footage. In discarding the conventional narrative structure, a fresh language of film evolves with which to observe, report, and critique.

Jane Nisselson has directed short documentaries for the Corning Museum of Glass, International Flavors & Fragrances, MoMA, The New School, Penn State University, Popular Mechanics, Seed Media, W Magazine and the Wyss Institute, Harvard. Having trained at MIT’s Media Lab, Nisselson worked as a journalist and a software designer before founding her film production studio Virtual Beauty. Nisselson’s systems-based projects include a National Science Foundation funded viral video titled “Explaining Diagrams” and a resident scholarship to film molecular models built by Linus Pauling.

Each lecture is followed by a lively Q&A session and refreshments in the D-Crit Reading Room. Thanks to the support of our partner, Mailchimp, lectures are free and open to the public, but you do need to register to reserve your space.
